Books children ask for again

Writing for children is not writing shorter. It is writing to a reading age, a page count and a read-aloud rhythm, with pictures carrying half the story. We produce for every stage from board book to middle grade.

What this is

A children’s book has constraints an adult novel does not. Picture books run to a 32-page signature, so the story has to break across spreads before a word is typeset. Early readers live inside a controlled vocabulary. Middle-grade novels have to hold a reader who will abandon the book the moment it slows down. And in every one of them, the illustrations are not decoration — they carry meaning the text deliberately leaves out. We plan all of that before anyone starts drawing.

What’s included

  • Picture books — 32-page spread planning, page-turn beats and read-aloud pacing
  • Early readers and chapter books calibrated to a target reading age
  • Middle-grade and young-adult novels, developmental edit included
  • Rhyme and verse checked for scansion, not just for rhyme
  • Comics and graphic novels — script, panel breakdown, lettering and layout
  • Illustration: character sheets, roughs, finals and a matching cover
  • Print specification for board, paperback or hardback, including bleed and trim

How it runs

01Age and format

We fix the reading age, page count and trim before drafting, because those decide everything after.

02Manuscript

Text first, marked up with what each spread or panel has to show.

03Illustration

Character sheets, then roughs across the whole book, then finals once the sequence works.

04Production

Typeset to the printer’s specification and proofed on the actual page size.

Why it matters

Children are the least forgiving readers there are. They do not finish a book out of politeness.

Ready when you are

One conversation is usually enough to tell you whether this is the right next step.
